“Two Schools under one Roof” in Bosnia and Herzegovina: Exploring the challenges of group identity and deliberative values among Bosniak and Croat st…

2014

Abstract The purpose of this study was to explore the challenge of engaging Bosniak and Croat students in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) in deliberative democracy within the context “two schools under one roof,” students receiving education in the same school building, yet attending separate classes and following distinct curricula. Findings suggest that group identity for Bosniak students was strongly tied to “being Bosnian” while Croat students expressed ambivalence and unease about their identity, balancing feelings between having their home in BiH and maintaining their Croat roots. The students’ relationships were complicated by an imbalance in perceptions of power, discriminatory attitud…

Democratic institutions and recognition of individual identities

2016

This paper draws from two central intuitions that characterize modern western societies. The first is the normative claim that our identities should be recognized in an authentic way. The second intuition is that our common matters are best organized through democratic decision-making and democratic institutions. It is argued here that while deliberative democracy is a promising candidate for just organization of recognition relationships, it cannot fulfil its promise if recognition is understood either as recognition of ‘authentic’ collective identities or as recognition of too atomistic or individualized subjects. If deliberative democracy is to be understood as successfully providing au…

Democratic Meta-Deliberation: Towards Reflective Institutional Design

2014

Theories of deliberative democracy are popular for their promise that in a deliberative polity, democracy can realise both participatory politics and rational policies. However, they are also confronted with the allegation that by qualifying essentially non-democratic practices as deliberative, they inadvertently (or not) become accomplices in the trend towards post-democratic governance. A central example of such a development is the rise of non-majoritarian bodies to which governments delegate decision making, thereby de-politicising conflicts and turning democratic discourses into technocratic ones. This article adopts a systemic perspective on deliberative democracy, asking whether non-…

E-Democracy and Public Online Budgeting

2014

If social media are to reinforce sustainability of political decisions their design has conceptually to take into account the implications of deliberative democracy, which stresses the active co-operation of virtually all citizens of a democracy for the purposes of participatory involvement. Essential to deliberative e-democracy is therefore a technologically supported comprehensive discourse about political subjects which is also called Deliberation. Theoretical implications of Deliberation are discussed from the angle of political science and social psychology. Finally, the practical implications of Deliberation rooted in social media are exemplified by an online citizen involvement for t…

Grassroots Social Innovation for Human Development: An Analysis of Alternative Food Networks in the City of Valencia (Spain)

2017

This paper explores the contribution the capability approach (CA) and grassroots innovation (GI) literature makes to a better understanding of the complexity, richness and specificity of bottom-up processes of social innovation (SI), and their specific contribution to social transformation. Using a purely qualitative methodology, the paper addresses a case study—organic food buying groups in the city of Valencia—and examines them through the lenses of SI, GI and CA. By taking four concurrent dimensions of the SI literature (agents, purposes, drivers and processes) and cross-fertilising them with the bottom-up, people-driven character of GI, and the concepts of agency, capabilities, delibera…

Consultazioni elettroniche, democrazia deliberativa e migranti

2012

Il contributo riflette sul rapporto tra migranti e amministrazione pubblica attraverso le nuove tecnologie dell'Informazione e della Comunicazione. Analizzando la questione, centrale e ancora poco indagata, delle nuove forme di consultazione pubblica e di democrazia deliberativa The article considers the ICT-mediated relationship between migrants and public administration. Moreover the paper studies the central and still little explored issue of new forms of public consultations and deliberative democracy.

Planning for Sustainability: Between Risks and Lifeworlds

2015

In this chapter, Planning for sustainability: Between risks and lifeworlds, Mikaela Vasstrom and Hans Kjetil Lysgard present ideas of a planning study that takes a critical perspective on planning. What are the alternative planning ideas? Planning is a field where different paradigms meet. How can one approach that? Their suggestion is a combination of participatory and critical planning. There is a strong account of planning and sustainability with better links between planning and Higher Education. Empowerment may provide a connection. For both planning and education, we need an understanding of context. The discussion of universities is thought-provoking.

Democrazia deliberativa e Convenzione europea dei diritti umani

2010

Deliberative democracy and the European Convention on Human Rights Theories of deliberative democracy have rapidly become very popular amongst political scientists. The central argument of these theories is that democratic legitimacy of lawmaking does not lie (or does not only lie) in the elected character of Parliaments but in public delib- eration processes. Decisions have to be justified by reasons and reasons have to be publicly debated. Legitimacy also depends on the opportunity for citizens to participate effectively in public debates. In this paper I argue that the European Court of Human Rights can be a key player in promoting a democracy based on public deliberation and that in the…

COLLECTIVE DELIBERATION: A CONTEMPORARY CONTRIBUTION OF BRAZILIAN BIOETHICS TO THE SUS' (UNIFIELD HEALTH SERVICE) PRACTICES

2017
